Cold nuclear fusion: Viewpoints of solid-state physics

We discuss some of the possible electronic mechanisms which may provide a sizeable reduction of the Coulomb repulsion between deuterium nuclei adsorbed into metals necessary to explain the reported fusion rates at room temperature.
