Quantise everything! - TS03

In this third tutorial of the series we introducing the idea that the environment (aka the universe) which interacts with our two state system is a giant quantum system that can be described by an uncountably large number of possible states. Such a description is obviously outside the scope of a single notebook and probably outside the scope of a single human mind ? . Nevertheless, we will “discover” the physics of spontaneous emission by trying to capture the essence if this complexity, i.e. by re-expressing the effect of a classical field in quantum terms (aka “quantising the field”) which lets us represent the field in terms of particles called bosons.

To accomplish this, we will introduce elements of quantum field theory which uses some advanced physics under the hood. We will not attempt to give a rigorous account of these topics, we will instead link out to other resources. Our focus will be on describing the essential bits of physics that need to come together to quantise a field and then using well known results to get to the interesting physics (with the help of QuTiP).

This is the most challenging notebook so far and you may wish to revisit it a couple of times. In creating the notebook we had to revisit the underlying topics many times so you will be in good company ? .
